The Night Angel Trilogy

Release dates for the Night Angel Trilogy:

The Way of Shadows (Oct 1 US, Oct 2 UK)

Shadow’s Edge (Oct 28 US, Nov 6 UK)

Beyond the Shadows (Nov 25 US, Dec 4 UK)

There are no firm street dates, so if you’re dying for the next book, some stores may stock the titles up to a week early. Borders in several parts of the U.S. has done so.

The Science Fiction Book Club just bought the rights to publish an 3-in-1 hardcover omnibus edition! It will be entitled Night Angel: A Trilogy. Publication date and more details, including cover art once I get permission.

The Night Angel Trilogy will be published in English (Orbit US, Orbit UK), French (Bragelonne), German (Blanvalet), and Dutch (Mynx).

I just got done reading way of shadows and it was incredible! Keep up the good work because you write the kind of fantasy novels I like to read:gritty, violent, twist-filled with great worldbuilding.

I can not wait for the second in the series, and I am not quite done the first yet. But, knowing that I don’t have to wait very long makes me happy. I am completely hooked.

Very impressive! And thank you for releasing all the books in a short time frame. It increases the enjoyment of reading trilogies. You are the new number one on my list, keep up the good work.

Thanks, guys. I hope that book 2 blows your socks off!

The Way of Shadows was outstanding! I had to laugh when I was reading the “Interview” in the back of the book about how you dreamed of keeping people up late reading your books. It was almost 4am when I looked at the clock…so your dream has come true! I just couldn’t put the book down. A very engrossing story and great characters. I look forward to the rest of the story and any future books you write. Thank you!

I’ve just finished The Way of the Shadows and I have to say that I haven’t been hooked from the first page of a book since Dresden Files. Great work, though I’m a little put off that the next two books are going to be released while I’m in Iraq… Any chance you have some book stores in that area?! You’ve got an amazing talent (eh? eh?) for pulling readers in. I’ll bring the book with me for a reread while I’m gone. Congratulations and give a hero biscuit to your Bulgarian compatriot!

  8. October 8th, 2008 at 9:53 pm brent says:

Eric, lol. Nice. You remind me of a character in book 3 who works in the chutes room… You’ll know what I’m talking about when you get there. Oh, and the Bulgarian says thanks for the biscuit. They’re his faves. I’ll get right on my agent about getting an Arabic book deal… you do speak Arabic, right?
Bart, thank you. I guess I’m either doing something right or there are just a lot of compulsive readers out there, because it seems I’m apologizing a lot for keeping people up WAY too late. So here’s your apology. I’m sorry I kept you up. (Sort of.) :)

  9. October 9th, 2008 at 5:46 pm Raelynn says:

I will have all three novels, and yet I know I’ll be buying the 3-in-1. Easily you have slipped up into my top favorite authors. Helps that you grew up in my home state.
I was hooked in the very first page and by page five (while trying not to twitch as you mentioned one of my greatest fears-the wolf spider), I was telling those poor souls in my 0 Period all about the novel–and I was not even far enough in that you would really expect me to be able to chatter off their ears for more than a minute. However, I managed to do such for at least fifteen minutes, maybe more.
I tried to read slowly. I truly did. That was incredibly difficult, though. I wanted more. Especially because whenever I was really into what was happening, you would change point of views and suddenly it was two (give or take) years later! Had to continue reading to figure out what happened to everyone in that time. Thus, putting it down was near impossible. Up until a certain point in which I wanted to, you know, go dig my eyes out or find you and possibly yell ‘WHY?’ randomly, creeping you out and feeling quite like a stalker.
Even then I could not stop. Seriously. You have got me rambling over just how amazing your book is. How much I’m looking forward to the next one…and how you have given me a mere two days to read Shadow’s Edge. [Since I will be working on NaWriMo in November.]
So thanks for such an addicting book, amazing characters, and the chance to yell at my copy of your novel: “No, you did NOT just end on me.”
I’m happy to see your site up and can’t wait to fix up the doodles I made while being unable to continue reading in class, but also unable to stop thinking about it–thus drawing scenes when really, I should have been listening to my teachers try to convince me that they have valuable information to hand out that I may possibly (but most likely will not) need in life. ;3

  10. October 9th, 2008 at 9:37 pm brent says:

Raelynn, yeah, I was a teacher, so I probably should tell you to TRY to pay attention in class. But, honestly, if I had students who were reading rather than paying attention, I always pretty much knew they were going to be okay no matter what. Spiders creep me out, too. Good news? I don’t think there’s any more spiders in the whole trilogy. Heh. Bad news? There’s definitely other yucky stuff. Anyway, thanks so much for your note and for pitching my book to your friends. I hope you love the rest of the books… and, uh, I hope you don’t stalk me, too. ;)

  11. October 10th, 2008 at 2:29 pm Raelynn says:

In a few years I will be said teacher trying to tell all of my students that I really, truly, have information to help them in life…and yet I play the bad student role whenever I have a good novel on hand. It is a good thing I will be teaching English and thus students reading in my class will not exactly be a ‘bad’ thing. Most of the time. I am happy we are on the same page with the spiders, though. Also happy that there will not be any more spiders. A little worried as to what else will be in the next two books, but completely looking forward to finding out. Again, thank ‘you’ for a series that makes me go out in search for your website in order to give said note, and the need to make others read the book so I can discuss it with them. I am quite sure I will enjoy the next books and I agree with you. I quite hope I do not follow that stalkeresque path.
[Your books also give me the chance to prove to my fellow classmates here in California that there is so little to do in Montana that we all write novels for fun. Even if you were not living in MT at the time you were writing, it is a valid point.]

  12. October 13th, 2008 at 3:38 pm Tim Kerr says:

I just finished The Way of Shadows and all I can say is wow. I really enjoyed the book, it grabbed me right from the first page, and held me captive right to the end. And yes I even read the acknowledgements. Anyway, I can’t wait to start Shadow’s edge and then Beyond the Shadows. Keep up the great work, I can’t wait to see what you do after this trilogy.

    Cheers!

  13. October 13th, 2008 at 4:14 pm Wayne says:

I’ve been reading fantasy since Junior High in Montana and Way of the Shadows is by far the best read I’ve ever had the pleasure of laying my eyes on. It’s what fantasy novels should be and I can’t wait for the rest of the trilogy.

  14. October 14th, 2008 at 7:40 am brent says:

Tim, cheers! Yeah, you’re not alone in the “can’t wait to see what I do after this trilogy”. I’m writing the pitch for my next novel THIS WEEK. My agent and editor are anxious to see it. I guess that’s a whole lot better than neither of them caring! (Btw, always did love saying Cheers, though the Brits did have this funny notion that _I_ had an accent.)
Wayne, wow, that’s high praise. Thank you very much.
And Wayne and Raelynn, what is it with all the Montanans? I mean, there’s not even a million of us and here’s three of us in this room. (Even if I am an expatriate.) I think Paolini came from Montana, too. Huh, something in the water, I guess.
Okay, gotta go work on that pitch…

  15. October 16th, 2008 at 4:30 pm Nik says:

I just finished reading Way of Shadows last night.

Wow. I’ll be scouring my local Chapters over the next week and a half, hoping to catch an early release date for Shadow’s Edge.

  16. October 16th, 2008 at 7:51 pm Raelynn says:

We come in packs? I can honestly, though sadly, say that I’m responsible for only one Montanian picking up your novel as of yet. Of course, when I visit this Christmas, there will be quite a few more having read your book(s). :]
It makes for a good Christmas present for a lot of people I have not seen in a long time. Good way to come back being my old book-shoving-in-face self.
P.S. I could probably figure it out with more rereading, but I have not been able to. What color is Kylar’s hair during the, um…well, to broaden and not spoil, the scene of the party? It changes at one point, I know..but I don’t recall the color being mentioned again…
P.S. Yay for early releases. Time to call my bookstores and make sure they have it is. ;D

I must say I bought the way of shadows on impulse, the name of the book, especially the cover art is what draws me to it.

I must say I am not disappointed, its a great read all the way thru.

Looking forward to ur future books.

I loved the Way of Shadows! I remember walking into the book store looking for something good to read when I came across your book. I started reading the first two chapters and had no choice but to buy it; and I’m glad I did. I never ever wrote fan mail before, (partly because I’m shy) but I thought you’d like to know how much I loved your book. The characters were great! The story was unique and the action incredible! Most times I could see the scenes, running through my mind like a movie. I can’t wait to get a hold of the second and third books! Keep up the good work. :-)

Similar to others who posted, I came across your book through advertising, and read chapter 1 last week. I picked up The Way of Shadows the next day. Slow reader, and work, and girlfriend getting in the way, I read the last 400 odd pages today. Last time I did that was with George R.R. Martin’s last book three of Song of Fire and Ice Series. I don’t think Robin Hobb’s books have captured my interest to that level.
Truly amazing story, your capacity to weave an intriguing, fun-actioned packed story filled with heart wrenching turns is incredible. I apologize for not having the vocabulary to truly be able to describe the depths and layers of enjoyment I received reading your tapestry of masterful work of art of story telling.
I will be sharing my copy with my friends and co-workers so that they get hooked and buy the rest of the series.
And I am unable to contain my excitement and my glee, knowing that I don’t have to wait years for the remainder of the series. Brilliant strategy to not wait for a year or more for the next installment of the story of the Night Angel! From a grateful fan Thank You so much! Waiting is such torture, please don’t make the mistakes of others such as Robert Jordan (who I abandoned after book 6, and I will never read a word he ever writes), and Martin (too bad his story is too compeling for me to abandon :))
May you find success in your next projects! I will certainly pick them up! Best wishes and happiness to you and your family from a throughly satisfied fan.
Thanks for giving me a “helluva ride”, you’ve definitely got more than a few pages to convince me every time.

    Cheers
    Sud

Sud, just letting you know that Robert Jorden passed away in 2007.. he won’t be writing any more words..

So what rock did you crawl out from? Seriously how dare you dethrone Eddings and Feist from the pinnacle of my favorite authors. As everyone has previously mentioned the Night Angel Trilogy was absolutely amazing. It was so fluid that I finished each book in a night. I couldn’t put it down. Who cares if I had work at 8am the next day. It was worth it reading until 6:45.

I loved that I was able to get all three books without waiting a year or more in between them. I applaud you for that. I can’t wait to read your future works.

  28. January 5th, 2009 at 7:16 pm Ian says:

First off let me say that I loved all 3 books. I’ve been reading fantasy for years and this (for me) blows away the inheritance cycle. I dont know when it started, maybe when i got Assassin’s Creed on Xbox, I’m not sure lol but I have been craving a book like yours. When I was browsing Amazon i found it under recommendations and after reading the summary i was surprised i never heard of it before. Now that i finished all 3 books in a week, I CANNOT BELEIVE that more people have not read this. Maybe its the advertisement, I did have to dig pretty deep in Borders to find it but Christ, this book was phennomenal.– and you can bet im pretty p.o.ed that its over. I doubt i’ll be able to go back to another fantasy after this one, so hopefully you can write one that can compete and fast! (no pressure :))

    Hey Brent,

My name is Shelby… I just heard about your books from a friend in Alberta…I also read all the comments about the books. I have a couple questions… Has your books come to Saskatchewan yet because I would really enjoy to read them? Do you think that there is any age limit to reading your books? What other books have you written that you might recommend?

Thank you.. Hope to hear from you soon!

I read this book when I was 14, I absolutely loved it. I couldn’t put it down, and i stayed up until 3 or 4 most nights reading it. I am using it for my novel study book, and I can’t wait to get the 2nd and 3rd books.:)

  33. April 3rd, 2009 at 7:15 pm Benosmash says:

Found your books through word of mouth. it took me a little while to get into it, but once I got hooked, I couldn’t put the first book down and I finished the last 3/4 in almost a day.

I’m glad I blindly bought all three books in the trilogy, trusting the recommendation I received.

  34. May 11th, 2009 at 12:45 pm Mike says:

I think I would have to say that the Night Angel trilogy is by far the best i’ve ever read. Absolutely stunning.
