Probably not something I should admit - but I definitely judge a book by its cover. If the book cover doesn't appeal/look interesting/look as if effort was put into it - I generally won't risk a new author unless they've been recommended to me. This cover for Black Prism would not have made me start reading the book if I didn't know Brent Week's work now. It isn't a cover that will draw in new readers and is actually extremely generic. Almost reminds me of some of the covers on paranormal romances - which are not my books of choice. Although I do not think a cover like this will lose you readers who love your previous work - I do not think it will appeal to the masses the way the NAT did.
